An outreach communication from Kapas organic cotton project
Over the last decades, failed crops, increased pre-harvest expenses, manipulated seeds and unfair business practices have driven thousands of cotton farmers and weavers to despair.
Upasana, CCD and Bestseller Fund have been working for the past three years with 400 organic cotton farmers in Madurai under the Kapas organic cotton project. Kapas wishes to empower and promote the fragile rain-fed cotton farmer communities of Tamil Nadu and position short staple cotton as a strength in the market, although mainstream industry is rapidly moving towards long staple cotton. Kapas promotes indigenous cotton varieties and organic farming techniques.
Kapas also supports organic advocacy in India, the second largest country in the world and the biggest supplier of organic cotton in the world. India needs to take a stand in the organic farming world, not merely by supplying organic cotton to the Western market, but by being a conscious user of organic produce. This alone will contribute positively to our planet. Kapas creates consumer literacy around organic issues in India through an online directory called India organic.net. Cotton - a way forward.
The exhibition, ‘Cotton, a way forward’, is Kapas’s communication strategy to showcase what is happening around cotton in the world and in India, taking into consideration the consequences and the price we have to pay. It will be a thought provoking art installation about cotton.
We invite you to join hands with us.
