In February 2006, there was international news that 50,000 weavers in Varanasi were on the streets. The Indian markets were swarmed by cheap Chinese imitations that displaced the  original hand woven  fabrics of Varanasi. Many were concerned. Best Seller a well known clothing company from Denmark, came forward and entrusted Upasana to help the weavers community.

As a part of this project, 13,000 silk scarves hand-woven in Varanasi were distributed among their employees all over the globe as New Year gift, 2007.

Eventually this project grew into a full scale social development work called Varanasi Weavers
