Money is not the all-important element of economy in Upasana and there is no personal property. Wealth in Auroville transcends personal possession and takes on the form of collective wealth, which would lead to collective well-being.
The main idea behind the businesses is to provide for the requirements and growth of the community. Legally, the business units contribute 33% of their profits to the Auroville Foundation, although quite often in many cases the units voluntarily contribute up to 80%.
A Chartered Accountant audits the accounts of every trust/business unit and then it is submitted to the Foundation which forwards it to the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India.
