The core members are the stewards of Upasana. Collectively they chart out the course for the design studio – strategizing, connecting up with people and groups and initiating and sustaining projects. Our core members are our storehouse of information at Upasana and they are the caretakers of various projects as well as the campus.

The Upasana family is of over 40 people that includes staff members from neighbouring villages, Aurovillians, design professionals,volunteers and student interns from all around the country and the world. Upasana offers a collective space for learning and creative expression in every sense. The exchange of ideas, cultures and skills is the essence of our existence and growth. We also work with teams outside the campus that help us in production activities, especially groups of enthusiastic women who we mobilized through projects like ‘Tsunamika’ and ‘Small Steps’.
Kalai works at the office of Upasana, and is in-charge of the various shops that Upasana works with around the country. She is also the one who communicates with guests and customers. Not only that, Kalai also handles part of the accounts within Upasana, making her quite the multi-tasker! Kalai loves to work here because of the interesting challenges and lessons it offers her.
Supriya came to Upasana as an intern during her final year at NIFT Chennai. Soon, with her skills at designing and sampling, Supriya became a part of Upasana design team. Supriya likes to work here because of the pleasant atmosphere and challenging work culture.
Moved to Auroville earlier in 2016, Madhumita started her adventure with Upasana as a volunteer, designing and setting up this very website! Being a communication designer, Madhumita is now handling the communication department and e-commerce at Upasana. She enjoys working at Upasana because of its calming environment and the social impact of the work done here.
4 years ago, Alli started with tailoring at Upasana and then moved on to sampling. She is responsible for creating the first sample of any proposed design and a collection goes ahead once that is approved. She loves working with textiles and constantly learning about new designs and fabrics.
Working with Upasana for 14 years, Meena manages the stock deliveries to retail stores and exhibitions. Often working under tight deadlines, her superpower is manifest in the way she manages her time and targets. Her journey has seen her working upward from tailoring room to production supervision to stockroom management.
Having dealt with hand flat knitting, purchasing and various moving parts of Upasana over last 15 years, Dinesh is now working as the production manager. His typical day involves supervising the stitching and production, managing deadlines for a collection etc. He tells with a smile how he loves the collaborative and friendly environment at Upasana – “We are all a big family”.
She is the first person you will encounter (virtually) at Upasana in case you are an intern or a volunteer. She is in-charge of outreach of Upasana.
Born and educated in Montpellier, France, Julie moved to Auroville 5 years ago. Her passion for fashion brought her to Upasana in 2015. She now coordinates various marketing efforts including exhibition outreach and communications. Her creative self also found its expression through the Upcycle collection for which she does patchwork designing. A lover of heights, she can be found cleaning the Matrimandir’s highest disks on some afternoons!
6 years ago, Rama came to Upasana to handle the reception and has worked her way up to managing the purchasing and overall administration of the Upasana office. She does rue the fact that she thinks twice before taking a vacation because so many things stall in her absence. But she quickly brightens up – “I love Upasana and how I have learned communications and managing complex responsibilities. This is a place to learn and grow.”
Coming from a small fascinating town Bhopal, Shubha discovered Pondicherry following her wish to educate her daughter, Janaki in the Sri Aurobindo School of the Ashram. Upasana was always an inspiring unit in Auroville to go and take friends to visit. She joined as manager of boutique Janaki when it opened in Pondicherry in 2014, hosting 32 beautiful brands. Now happily taking care of two JANAKIS!
Working with Upasana for last seven years, Amudha has handled production supervising to stockroom management in addition to coordinating the famous Tsunamika project. Now, she oversees the sales at the retail shops. Coming from a limited education and poor background, Amudha started making incense sticks for a living. At Upasana, she has learned computers and English. This growth and opportunity to learn new skills keeps her motivated everyday of her work. Today, she is a proud mother of a son who she is able to educate well.
